Energy city: Your path to a sustainable and future-orientated energy policy

The Energy City label is a recognised certificate of achievement for municipalities and regions that implement a sustainable and future-oriented energy policy. Energy cities focus on promoting renewable energies, environmentally friendly mobility and the efficient use of resources - always with the aim of creating a liveable and climate-friendly future for their population.

Swiss Climate not only accompanies you on the path to certification as an energy city, but also supports you in successfully implementing the identified measures. We are at your side as a long-term partner - even independently of the label - and provide you with comprehensive advice on energy and climate policy. The Energy City label serves as a powerful environmental management tool with which you can systematically and effectively pursue your municipal energy and climate goals.

The Energy City label comprises six fields of action: (1) Development planning, spatial planning, (2) Municipal buildings and facilities, (3) Supply and disposal, (4) Mobility, (5) Internal organisation, (6) Cooperation & communication

In a first step, the existing and planned measures and indicators in the six fields of action are recorded and evaluated in order to create a profile of the municipality's strengths and weaknesses. Based on this, a programme of activities is drawn up with possible measures for the next four years. The strengths and weaknesses profile and the programme of activities are updated every four years as part of the recertification process. Indicators for energy consumption, CO₂ emissions and other relevant data are recorded both in energy accounting and in the dashboard. This gives you a practical tool that not only helps you to monitor progress towards the net-zero target, but also enables you to derive measures and optimise the results on an ongoing basis.
