Resource and environmental management

Municipalities and cantons play a central role in achieving the legally enshrined net-zero target. As public institutions with a duty to lead by example, they are particularly called upon to actively shape and drive change.

But how can net zero be achieved in practice? It is often challenging, especially for small and medium-sized municipalities, to maintain an overview and realistically assess which measures are feasible, sensible and effective. But larger cities and municipalities also face complex tasks, for example due to the high population density and the large number of stakeholders involved.

What Swiss Climate offers

Swiss Climate supports you as a municipality or cantonal authority on your individual path to the net-zero target. With our expertise and field-tested solutions, we support you in implementing effective measures – and thus contribute to the fulfilment of the Paris Agreement and Switzerland's national climate targets.

Swiss Climate offers support in the following areas to achieve a net-zero target:

Greenhouse gas accounting

The accounting of greenhouse gas emissions is a central basis. Our CO₂ management experts can support you with the following greenhouse gas accounting:

  • Greenhouse gas balance of the administration
  • Greenhouse gas balance of the municipal or cantonal territory (territory)

Based on a greenhouse gas assessment, we can help you define climate targets and/or develop an action plan. Developing a climate strategy offers a comprehensive approach.

Resource and environmental management

In 2019, Switzerland set itself the climate target of net-zero emissions by 2050. To achieve this goal, the federal government has drafted the Climate and Innovation Act and, in Article 10, paragraph 4, ‘The exemplary role of the federal government and cantons’, stipulated that the cantons are required to pursue the net-zero target for their central administrations by 2040 for direct, indirect, upstream and downstream greenhouse gas emissions.

To achieve this goal, Swiss Climate supports you in setting up a resource and environmental management system for your administration. We proceed as follows:

  1. Analysis of the current situation with a greenhouse gas balance of the administration
  2. Definition of fields of action, measures and goals
  3. Definition of the organisational anchoring
  4. Outline of personnel and financial requirements

Set an example and make your contribution to achieving the net-zero target. Our experts will work with you to develop solutions that are tailored to your circumstances and needs.
